CANADA FOR ADVENTURERS
From its
icy, rushing rivers to its rugged mountain peaks, Canada is a paradise for
outdoor enthusiasts. Hit the waves or seek your thrills on dry land; whatever
your preference, adventurous souls will find plenty to keep them busy across
the country’s dramatic landscapes.
Bike the Rockies
In summer, ski slopes turn into splendid mountain biking
trails at Whistler and other Rocky Mountain resorts. At Grouse Mountain , just outside Vancouver, you can join a mountain-bike tour or head off on
your own to enjoy amazing views over the city, coast, and Columbia Mountains.
White-Knuckle Rafts
Canada’s fast-flowing rivers offer plenty of opportunities
for keen whitewater rafters. Beginners should try the Slave River between Fort
Smith and Fort Fitzgerald in the Northwest Territories , where the rapids
are relatively gentle. Adrenaline junkies can opt for the rapids of Ottawa
River Provincial Park, or the Shubenacadie River in Nova Scotia, where tidal
bores create unique rafting conditions.
Surf’s Up
You’ll find Canada’s best surfing conditions along the west
coast. Hardcore surfers should head for the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve
and the town of Tofino , renowned as Canada’s top surfing spot. For
Atlantic waves, White Point Beach is one of several popular surfing
beaches along the coast of Nova Scotia.
Windy Watersports
The Patricia and Pyramid Lakes provide a scenic
mountain backdrop for windsurfing and sailing. Winds gusting across the Great
Lakes also make them prime spots for sailing and kitesurfing. When conditions
are right, you can even try lake surfing on Lake Huron or Lake Ontario .
Skating Scenes
Lace up a pair of skates and take a twirl on the ice. There
are indoor and outdoor skating rinks, often with music, at parks and plazas
across the country, including Toronto City Hall and Assiniboine Park . Warm up afterwards with a sweet cup of hot chocolate.
